1950's Wedding Cake

Whew! By far my most difficult project. I had no idea I knew so little about butter cream. I have to say, if I was 20 years older, I probably would have never gotten into cakes because butter cream is not nearly as fun. With that said, I am actually happy and proud that I pulled this cake together. It was for a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary-WOW! And their family put on the coolest party I've ever seen. They gave me a picture of the couple's wedding cake and wanted to replicate it. You can imagine the little detail I could figure out with one, it being a 50 year old pic and two, me knowing very little about decorating with butter cream. I told them I would do it the best I could but it wouldn't be exact. I tried to paste the original picture in but I'm having a hard time with it. It's a little taller and a little more pink than the picture but it came out closer than I thought it would. I worked 10 hours on this cake on Saturday and I have to say I am wiped out! I had a few panicky moments when I couldn't remember how to do a butter cream rose and when I couldn't figure out a few other things but I managed and I have something new to show. Again, whew!

Tonka

These cakes came out way cuter than I pictured in my head. I actually had a hard time with figuring out a creative way to do a Tonka cake. It was also to be the colors orange, yellow and blue. I can't tell you how excited I was to find one last box of Tonka trucks in those colors at the store. I met the super cute one year old whose cake this is for and I can imagine the fun little mess he'll make with his cupcake. :) It's quite huge for a toddler.

This was for my friend also turning 27 this month. The idea came from an invitation I got. I think it's my new favorite color scheme. I wish I could paint my house like this. :)

Cassy's Cake

My husband said I shouldn't post this cake with how sloppy it came out but I don't care. It's just an example of what happens when I spend less than 4 hours decorating a cake. Plus, I made this cake for MY birthday and I didn't feel like putting the time and effort into it that I normally would. The main reason I made it was because I've been searching for a decent white cake recipe (I've tried dozens!), and I made two different ones and wanted my family's opinion. I think I may have finally found a winner. I'll use it for my next few order's and see how it's received. Anyway, you don't have to know me very well to know I'm obsessed with the color green. I thought this cake suited me very well.

Gone Fishing

My father-in-law loves fishing and I'm pretty sure he goes once to several times a week so of course a fishing cake was very appropriate for his birthday. I had plans to put fish on there but I liked it a lot without them and didn't want to ruin it. Happy birthday Jerry!

Coral Pink W/ Flowers

The darn lighting ruined the picture but I love this cake! I was emailed a picture of some fabric to use for this 10 year old's birthday cake. I was worried because I didn't think I could make coral pink and I didn't know how to do the flowers (the roses in the pattern would have been difficult to cut out). When I thought of the idea to make the flowers, I just made them randomly unsure of how I'd put them on the cake. Once it all started coming together, I was super excited! The only thing different I would have done was make the flowers the same size but I loved the pink color and I loved the bow-I think it's my best one yet. I guess practice actually does make perfect (well, almost).

Late Night Wedding

I was happy with the way the cake turned out but disappointed in my flower arrangement abilities. The roses are a little big for the cake and I kept debating as I was assembling it whether the top tier should have the roses or the carnations but my eyes wanted red to be there instead of another row of white. Maybe I made the wrong choice and when I came home to show my husband worried that the big flowers ruined it, he told me the focus of this cake was not the flowers-his attention was diverted elsewhere. Good point, right? I was going to get a picture without the topper also but it really did tie the whole cake in together. It also fit the setting of the wedding with it being at 8pm! Kind of fun to see something so not traditional. I wish I could have met the bride. :)

White on White Wedding

I've wanted to do this kind of piping on a cake before so I was real excited when I got the request. There was supposed to be someone there to put on flowers but I wasn't able to wait any longer for them to come. I'll try to get a picture of it with the flowers if I can but I like it without them anyway. Each layer is a different flavor-yellow, lemon, carrot and chocolate. This was my biggest real cake so far. Yeah! I never thought in a million years I would ever be brave enough to do wedding cakes and this is my fourth. This cake thing has been one of the best things I've ever done!

"Be All That You Can Be"

Took me a while to think of a way to do camo but it finally came to me. My kids interrupted me while I was setting up the fondant which caused some of the areas to dry out a bit and you really only get one shot at it or you waste a lot of material but it came out pretty cool I think. This cake was for a cousin of mine going into the army. My uncle thought of the idea of using the army symbol which I thought was a great idea. Good luck to you Brad!
