Fun cake

This one has a lot going on. Perfect for a little girls birthday. I was given a picture to use for this cake and in my head, I never would have thought these colors together would have worked but they do. Now starts my two week break from cake! I'm almost done with my calendar and will post it soon.

Snowflakes!

This was another mini for my friends birthday. I thought since it's the holiday season, I'd try out my new snowflake cutters for her cake. Aren't they so cool!?!?! I was sloppy with the bow but oh well. I'm sad I don't have any more Christmas cakes-I have to wait till next year to use them again. Happy birthday friend!

I hate to say it...

I know I said I woudn't do this but I have decided to take the advice of several family and friends and raise my prices. :( I need to turn this "job" back into the hobby it was intended to be. Always grateful for referrals and I appreciate all who frequent my blog and order my cakes. Love you all! I will work on adding a calendar this week. I would like to keep cake order's to no more than 1 a week but if you see a week is taken, and you really want a cake, let me know and I will see if I can work you in for a slightly higher cost. Like I have said, wish I could do this full time but my life has no room right now.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

Football/Cheer Cake

I have been dreading this cake for a couple weeks now for 2 reasons. One, I knew it was going to be super time consuming and two, I didn't know if my idea was going to pan out (making cheerleader's). Luckily, it didn't take quite as long as anticipated (but I didn't get everything on there I'd hoped) and my little cheerleader's came out pretty cute. This cake was for a party for a little Pop Warner football team and cheer squad. We were going to do two separate cakes for the teams but I liked the idea of combining them since they are all part of the same organization. This was my last BIG cake project for the month and I only have two more smaller ones and then I can get ready for Christmas! Woo Hoo!

Pink Scrolls

I took a "creative" chance on this one and wasn't super thrilled with the results. I think if I'd done the cake pink with white scrolls, it may have looked better-or maybe a lighter pink. I dunno. It's still cute but not what I hoped. The sweet woman who ordered this cake seemed to like it and that's all that matters. She also gave me a Christmas present! It was all wrapped and everything and it totally made my day! I've never seen anything like it before. Isn't it so cool?! I love it! She said it would make me laugh and it so did! In case you can't tell, it's a cake server with a magnetic heal to make it look like a shoe. Ha! Thank you so much! I so love you!

Sports Cake

So I have to give my hubby a little credit on this one. I was a little stuck figuring out how to incorporate 3 sports for a father of 7.5 kids turning 40. I had some other ideas but they were a bit more childish. So Brian suggested I make the cake a basketball hoop. I thought it was a fun idea-I just hoped others could tell that's what it was supposed to be. Being a huge sports fan myself, I had a lot of fun with this one. The cap and score board are my fave's.

Another mini cake

I started this cake around midnight on Saturday after having one of the craziest Fridays of my life! Not super creative or colorful but turned out alright for how simple it was. I also bought some new rose petal cutters and just had to try them out!

Twins Blessing and Sealing day!

I was so honored to make this cake for this occasion. This couple adopted a set of twins-one boy and one girl. The babies were being blessed and sealed in the temple to their new parents. Can it get any sweeter? Since I couldn't find small booty cutter's, I had to carve my own. Somehow, I had no issues. I was so mad I forgot to take a picture of it and made a stop before delivery at a curb-hideous I know but at least something. I'm hoping to get a better pic from the family.
Edited 01/22/10 with better pix

Polka Dot Wedding

Sweet and simple! The flowers on top are arranged pretty nicely right? So was not I who did that. I love when I'm not the one responsible for the flower part-I'm so not good at it!

Pink and Green Wedding!

These are the best wedding colors ever!! I was way impressed with all the decorations at this reception-so pretty! This was the biggest of any of my cakes. To give you an idea, the top two tiers are the size of my regular 2-tier cakes-I know, right? We had to buy an extra fridge to fit all the pieces (we needed one anyway, how I've done cakes this long without an extra fridge is beyond me). This is supposed to be a tilted cake but it's kinda hard to tell in the picture. Half the tiers are strawberry cake and half are white. We even made one white cake green with white filling and another white cake with green filling. So crazy fun! I've been up passed midnight this whole week baking, making fillings, and putting decorations together. Plus I had the other two cakes which didn't help. Whew! After only getting 4 hours of sleep last night my husband asked how I can stay happy and I really think it's because I really enjoy making cakes and having that relief that I did something and it turned out. Congrats Clint and Michelle!

Poker Cake

I was thinking "wow, card cookies, that would be so cute!" and so I agreed to make them and then I realized, "wait a minute, that's going to be really hard." Typically, for decorative cookies, I would use royal icing and pretty much paint the cookie but I decided painting cards for a royal flush would not only be too time consuming, but wouldn't look very good either. Thankfully I have my little frosting printer and even though it gave me some grief and I went through several sheets of frosting paper, I finally got it to print some cards for me. And since I used that, I could use the better tasting butter cream for the icing. Also, I didn't realize you can't paint dyed fondant with white. I just couldn't get that to work right. Close up the chips are a bit sloppy but they look great far away. :)

November/December Prices

First, I just want to say THANK YOU to all who have ordered from me and referred me to others! I have gotten to know a lot of you and I consider a lot of you my friends. Thank you, thank you!

As much as I appreciate the business, it has created more work than I am able to keep up with. A lot of you know that I also have two kids, a part time job, and a very demanding calling with my church. With the holidays approaching, I am finding myself with no time to prepare for them, spend time with the ones I love most and do the things that are most important. I just gave a lesson on priorities and decided it is something I need to practice. Sooooo, if you decide you want a cake between now and December, I will be charging double. This excludes all order's I have already agreed to but to take on anymore requests would be crazy for me right now. I decided instead of saying I won't do anymore cakes at all, I am leaving it open for those of you who still really want one-it just has to be a little more worth my while. Hope you can understand.

I will also be making a few changes beginning 2010. I will not be raising my prices as long as an order is placed on a day/weekend that is available. What I mean is, if I already have a cake order and you want one on the same day, I will charge extra. I will be adding a calendar to my site so you can see what days I am open and you will know if you place an order on a filled spot, you can prepared to pay extra. More details to come...

Thank you all again for your support! I wish I had more time to make more cakes! Hope you know it kills me to raise prices or turn down a request but it's time that I put first things first. Seriously, you should see my house right now. It's horrific! :)

This is very similar to one I've done before and I still love it! Zebra print is so cool!

Candy Cake!

If someone asked you what was better than cake, what would your answer be? CANDY!! At least that's my answer. I love this cake!! I know I say all my cakes are fun but this one was the funnest! And the decor for this party was so cute! That is one lucky 3 year old! Oh, we also did cupcakes for the kids to decorate.

Golf

I have wanted to do a golf cake for a while mostly for the plaid. Love plaid! The ball was actually pretty hard to get round and I know the tee is a little big but you get the idea, right? The cake itself was something I'd never done before. Each tier has one layer of chocolate cake and one layer of white. It gave me the inspiration to try marble for a cake I have coming up. Sounds good to me!

Another baby boy blessing

What a baby weekend! I of course had to change this one up a bit by adding the name. These colors are so perfect for this occasion!

Mickey Mouse Baby Shower

This is the first I've heard of a mother doing Mickey Mouse for the nursery. I think it's a cute idea! I was excited when I got the cake order-I immediately knew I wanted to do the MM ears. The cake flavor is yellow cake with ganache. I get really nervous when I get an order for yellow cake because I have yet to find a recipe to my satisfaction. Flavor-wise is no issue. It's the texture I can't get right but I think that's yellow cake. I've tried at least 2 or more dozen recipes and even tried tweaking my own. I found a great white cake recipe but the yellow is still up in the air. Grrrr. If anyone knows a good one, let me know.

Lavander Baby Shower

Such a baby cake! The flavors were awesome! Lemon cake with raspberry filling. I was skeptical at first but made some sandwiches with scrap cake and I have to say, I am a big fan of lemon and raspberries now. I'm going to need to run extra long after this weekend! :)

"Handy" the mixer: 08/2001-10/30/2009

Last night was a sad cake night for me. My trusted assistant since 2004 has passed on. It was the summer of 2001 when I spotted this little hand mixer at the BYU creamery. I knew it would be worth way more than the $10 I purchased it for. I stored it away in my hope chest and brought it to life when I married in 2004. It got some use but it really came in "handy" (get it?) when I started my little cake hobby. It has worked so hard for me with every cake batter, every filling, and every icing I have ever made the last year and a half. I will never forget our good times together. It will be missed.

Okay, I knew I was going crazy when I almost kept my burned out hand machine for sentimental value. I forced myself to coffin, bury and memorialize it. :)

Elmo!!

What kid doesn't love Elmo? My cute little nephew turned 2 and had an Elmo birthday. This Elmo came out a little "plump" but it was easier and cuter than I thought it would be. I think I like the Sesame Street sign the best though. Happy birthday Klayton!

Pink and Purple Princess

The little girl this was for loves pink and purple so of course when they requested the princess cake, I had to incorporate both colors. I also used a different tiara template and it only took me the one try this time-yeah! Sadly my awful office lighting butchered the colors and pearl look. :( This was actually my 3rd request for this cake. Someone in Connecticut had asked about it but I'm too chicken to attempt shipping a cake. If anyone knows how or has any tips, please let me know! I think it can be done but from what I found out, it seemed unlikely it would make it there in one piece. Hmmmmmm...

Mini Cake

One of my beehives turned 13 yesterday so I thought I'd make her a mini cake. I don't know if you can tell in this picture but this cake is a a lot smaller than my usual cakes. It's a 6" and a 4". Happy birthday Chloe!

Pink Ladybug's

So I'm thinking that pink ladybugs are way cuter than red ones. This was for a little girl turning one and we of course had to do a little "smash" cake for her. I need to find a large cake pan that rounds out a little better. I thought the one I got would work but not so much. Again, my kids were very said to part with this one but it's a sad part of life they are learning to deal with. :)

Monkey's 1st Birthday

I haven't done a lot of sculpting with fondant but I think my monkey turned out pretty cute. I also really like the bananas. I think this was a perfect cake for a little boy turning one. My boys were both so excited when I made it and were asking for it after the cake was gone. Like I always say...way fun!

Iron Man

My little boy turns 3! :( I can't believe it's been a year since I made that first motorcycle cake. I was just barely getting into cakes then. So this is nothing fancy by any means. Not even really blog worthy but oh well. When I asked my son if he wanted a chocolate, white or strawberry cake, he said "I want an Iron Man cake." Funny thing is, he doesn't even really like cake. He loves to eat the fondant off of it which is what he did. We pealed off the iron man face for him and he was thrilled.

Zoe's Cake

I wasn't sure what to title this cake-it's got a lot going on. This family gave me a picture of a cake they wanted replicated. I thought it would be super easy because not only did I not have to think of anything (a lot of times more than half the battle), but the colors were simple/easy to make. It's been a while since I've had a cake give me so much trouble. I haven't done the wire design yet and it didn't work, although it looks like it did in the picture. It kept sliding around and flipping the designs over. I know next time to use something totally different than the wire I used. Overall, I love the colors and the cake is so fun.

Bowling

How cool did the bowling ball turn out? It wasn't the color I was going for but it has the marble/shiney appearance of a bowling ball. It's also made of rice treats which was something new for me. This was for Brian's aunt who I had no idea was big into bowling. I was way impressed as she bowled a turkey (3 strikes in a row). I guttered it twice and gave up. :)

Black scrolls and pink bridal shower cake

For sure my best square cake yet. It's actually level! Imagine that. And both tiers are the same height. I have wanted to do this scroll design but it's free hand and seemed difficult. I sure took a chance with using black for my first swirly design because if I messed up, there was no redoing it. Luckily, it turned out awesome (at least I think so)! :) And I always thought if I ever had a girl, I would decorate with pink and green but I'm really liking the black. So fun! This is the first of 3 cakes for this weekend...stay tuned.

Pretty as a Princess

How fun! Sorry but I have to say, girl cakes are so much more fun than boy cakes. It actually didn't come out the way I had envisioned. I was going to do a fondant tiara but saw a royal icing one on the web and thought it was way cooler and looked more like a tiara. It took me 3 tries but I love it! Sooooo, the cake came out way more pretty-looking than 5 year old cute-looking. Also, I'm introducing a new flavor...strawberry cake. Yes, this cake was pink from the outside-in. If I get reviews back that it wasn't so good, I'll take it off the list but my family got to try a bite and they all loved it so we'll see. One layer had cream cheese filling and the other was ganache w/ fresh sliced strawberries. The mommy did a pretty good job picking out flavors for her daughters birthday. :)

1950's Wedding Cake

Whew! By far my most difficult project. I had no idea I knew so little about butter cream. I have to say, if I was 20 years older, I probably would have never gotten into cakes because butter cream is not nearly as fun. With that said, I am actually happy and proud that I pulled this cake together. It was for a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary-WOW! And their family put on the coolest party I've ever seen. They gave me a picture of the couple's wedding cake and wanted to replicate it. You can imagine the little detail I could figure out with one, it being a 50 year old pic and two, me knowing very little about decorating with butter cream. I told them I would do it the best I could but it wouldn't be exact. I tried to paste the original picture in but I'm having a hard time with it. It's a little taller and a little more pink than the picture but it came out closer than I thought it would. I worked 10 hours on this cake on Saturday and I have to say I am wiped out! I had a few panicky moments when I couldn't remember how to do a butter cream rose and when I couldn't figure out a few other things but I managed and I have something new to show. Again, whew!

Tonka

These cakes came out way cuter than I pictured in my head. I actually had a hard time with figuring out a creative way to do a Tonka cake. It was also to be the colors orange, yellow and blue. I can't tell you how excited I was to find one last box of Tonka trucks in those colors at the store. I met the super cute one year old whose cake this is for and I can imagine the fun little mess he'll make with his cupcake. :) It's quite huge for a toddler.

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

This was for my friend also turning 27 this month. The idea came from an invitation I got. I think it's my new favorite color scheme. I wish I could paint my house like this. :)

Cassy's Cake

My husband said I shouldn't post this cake with how sloppy it came out but I don't care. It's just an example of what happens when I spend less than 4 hours decorating a cake. Plus, I made this cake for MY birthday and I didn't feel like putting the time and effort into it that I normally would. The main reason I made it was because I've been searching for a decent white cake recipe (I've tried dozens!), and I made two different ones and wanted my family's opinion. I think I may have finally found a winner. I'll use it for my next few order's and see how it's received. Anyway, you don't have to know me very well to know I'm obsessed with the color green. I thought this cake suited me very well.

Gone Fishing

My father-in-law loves fishing and I'm pretty sure he goes once to several times a week so of course a fishing cake was very appropriate for his birthday. I had plans to put fish on there but I liked it a lot without them and didn't want to ruin it. Happy birthday Jerry!

Coral Pink W/ Flowers

The darn lighting ruined the picture but I love this cake! I was emailed a picture of some fabric to use for this 10 year old's birthday cake. I was worried because I didn't think I could make coral pink and I didn't know how to do the flowers (the roses in the pattern would have been difficult to cut out). When I thought of the idea to make the flowers, I just made them randomly unsure of how I'd put them on the cake. Once it all started coming together, I was super excited! The only thing different I would have done was make the flowers the same size but I loved the pink color and I loved the bow-I think it's my best one yet. I guess practice actually does make perfect (well, almost).

Late Night Wedding

I was happy with the way the cake turned out but disappointed in my flower arrangement abilities. The roses are a little big for the cake and I kept debating as I was assembling it whether the top tier should have the roses or the carnations but my eyes wanted red to be there instead of another row of white. Maybe I made the wrong choice and when I came home to show my husband worried that the big flowers ruined it, he told me the focus of this cake was not the flowers-his attention was diverted elsewhere. Good point, right? I was going to get a picture without the topper also but it really did tie the whole cake in together. It also fit the setting of the wedding with it being at 8pm! Kind of fun to see something so not traditional. I wish I could have met the bride. :)

White on White Wedding

I've wanted to do this kind of piping on a cake before so I was real excited when I got the request. There was supposed to be someone there to put on flowers but I wasn't able to wait any longer for them to come. I'll try to get a picture of it with the flowers if I can but I like it without them anyway. Each layer is a different flavor-yellow, lemon, carrot and chocolate. This was my biggest real cake so far. Yeah! I never thought in a million years I would ever be brave enough to do wedding cakes and this is my fourth. This cake thing has been one of the best things I've ever done!

"Be All That You Can Be"

Took me a while to think of a way to do camo but it finally came to me. My kids interrupted me while I was setting up the fondant which caused some of the areas to dry out a bit and you really only get one shot at it or you waste a lot of material but it came out pretty cool I think. This cake was for a cousin of mine going into the army. My uncle thought of the idea of using the army symbol which I thought was a great idea. Good luck to you Brad!

Pink with Brown Polka Dots

I love simple cakes! I like how the pink turned out on this one. The flavor is pretty much chocolate covered strawberries. Sounds delish! I'll need to try that for myself sometime.

Things that make you go hhhmmmmmm...

I debated back and forth whether or not I should post this cake. I assume most of you viewers have no clue what this is. I surely didn't until my little sister told me one day "I want a Domo cake for my birthday." I then replied "Domo? What's that?" She googled it for me and pulled up a picture and I was dumbfounded. My other sister showed me some of its videos which only made it harder to understand what was so appealing about this thing. BUT, because I adore my sister and she did officially become an adult today, I granted her wish for a Domo cake. I'm only worried with what she'll come up with next year. :) Happy Birthday Shelli!
